For centuries, wood or parquet flooring has been a sign of nobility and sophistication. Wooden floorings lend elegance to your living environment; it is popularly used in many homes today.

The most common woods used today are hardwood from leaf bearing oak and walnut trees as well as pine from cone bearing tress. The quality of wood used is both hard and soft. Both are long lasting and durable.

The selection in wood for floors is huge and is also available in a large variety of colors and patterns. Imported woods are also easily available but tend to be a trifle more expensive. Some common examples are the Brailian, Cherry and Ipe wood types.

Some of the popular types of wood floor patterns are listed below.

Strip flooring The strips are long and narrow and come ready tongued and grooved. Usually two and a half inches wide, they are also available in a variety of thicknesses and widths.

Plank flooring It is wider than ordinary strip flooring and available up to 12 inches in width.

Block flooring As the name suggests, it is produced as a block and cross-branded with plywood.

Parquet flooring The typical parquet flooring is made of small pieces of wood laid to create the appearance of geometric patterns such as herringbone, checkerboard and basket weave designs.

Most wood floorings are about the same in strength and durability; what distinguishes them in terms of cost is however the aesthetic appeal of the wood. The nicer the grain and fewer the imperfections and knots, the more costly it will be. The best grade wood is clear and free of knots. However, the lesser grade variety fits a rustic look better while at the same time is more economical. The imperfections in these lesser grades sometimes add character to a place depending on how it is styled.

For a beautiful and elegant look, a clear variety wood will be the best. Wood gets better with age and proper care and well-installed flooring will last you a long time. It will mature to a mellow richness, which perhaps no other covering will give you.
