How to install a lavatory sink

By: Jakob Jelling

When it comes to installing a lavatory, there are several different methods to choose from depending on the type of lavatory you're looking to install.

For instance, if you want to install a lavatory that is on a pedestal, you'll need to make sure that you have enough space to put the pedestal in. This installation will also be considerably different from installing a lavatory into a countertop.

First, we will look at how to install a pedestal lavatory.

Before you start installing the lavatory, you should make sure that you measure where it will go. This way, you can mark off where the mounting will go. Ideally, you will be installing the sink somewhere where you can use the wall studs. You should also install blocking between the studs so that you will have enough support for the sink. This way, you don't have to worry about the pedestal supporting all of the lavatory weight.

Even though it seems like you should install the pedestal first, it is actually better to install the bowl first. After you install this, you should be able to put in the pedestal afterward and it should fit correctly. After you have the bowl and pedestal in place, then you can hook up the drainage and water pipes.

Next, we will look at how to install a countertop lavatory.

The most important thing is to make sure that you cut the countertop correctly to fit the sink. This is easiest if you have a sink that comes with its own rim. That way, you can just set the sink into the countertop after it is cut, caulk it, and be done!

The lavatory manufacturer should provide you with a pattern that you can use in order to cut out the countertop correctly. Before you actually install the lavatory into your cut countertop, you should make sure that you install the faucets. This way, after you put the countertop together, you will not have to reach in to install that faucet.

Finally, after your lavatory has been placed where you want it, connect the water and drain.
